Part Two Q&A with Alejandro Andrade

  1. Q.So, where are you in the process of The Making Of Sharpe’s Peril?

  1. A.I’m editing it. We will soon have the final cut. I hope that you can see it soon.

  2. Q.How different was being on the set compared to what you expected?

  1. A.It was great, all the cast and crew were very nice with me, helped me in all I needed and cooperative ìn The Making of... They are great professionals.

  1. Q.How has creating this documentary differ from other docs that you’ve done?

  1. A.The most difficult part was having so little time, I was there only one week and had to shoot all the material for The Making of... in those few days. In other projects I usually have much more time.

  1. Q.Now that you have been behind the scenes and have met people like Sean Bean, Daragh O’Malley and the other actors, what goals have you set for yourself in your documentary?

  2. A.I hope that I can show the audience what I experienced there, and hope that people can have a look behind the scenes as I did.

  1. Q.Did you find the actors, crew, and producers open to your ideas or did you have to find different ways of documenting the goings-on without seeming intrusive?

  1. A.Everyone was great. Obviously there are some situations and times of the shooting where everyone is stressed and concentrating on the shooting, on those particular times and situations it was harder, but at the end of the day, everyone helped me.

  1. Q.According to fans around the world and Sharpe's creator himself Bernard Cornwell, Sean Bean is Sharpe. Having had the opportunity to work up close with the actor, what would you say makes this true?

  1. A.He loves the character, he knows it very well and enjoys playing it.

  1. Q.Knowing you are contractually limited to what you can say about the script and the plot of Peril, can you tell the fans anything that will make them even more enthusiastic about seeing it? Any hints as to what will be included in in The Making of... that you can give us at this stage?

  1. A.I only can say that you will be surprised about everything in this new adventure. They’ve made a great film, with great locations and a big evolution of the Sharpe character.

  1. Q.You were not familiar with the Sharpe series or the books before you left for India. Have you had a chance now to see any of the early episodes or read any of the books?

  1. A.Yes I’ve seen some episodes and enjoyed them a lot. Haven’t read the books yet. Hope I can do it soon.

  1. Q.By now you have probably met some Sharpe fans, read the comments on the website and know that long time fans of the series feel like they are part of an extended family. How does that knowledge influence your creative process? Are you considering content that is geared towards the fans interests as you are working on this documentary?

  1. A.Yes, thank you very much for being part of this adventure. I hope that you like the documentary and find it interesting.

  1. Q.The Sharpe series is told from the British point of view. Given your Mexican heritage, did your find your country’s own colonization and struggle for independence from Spain affecting your view of the portrayal of the Indian characters in Peril? Did you sympathize with the Indian characters? Did it affect your approach to the Indian actors?

  1. A.Yes, I have a Mexican point of view, my country had a colonial past and a hard period of revolutions looking for independence. In a lot of ways India reminded me of my own country and our history. I think that Mexico and India have a lot in common, and I sympathize with the Indian characters and actors a lot.  But there are also a lot of things different from my country and from the way I live in Spain, so it was a strange mixture of feelings and thoughts.
